Goal 3: Economic Diversification.

Posted by CIFAdmin on Monday, February 07, 2005 (PST)
Diversify South Lincoln County’s economy.   South Lincoln County can be an attractive living location for more software developers, and “high tech” small business entrepreneurs, among other types of business not currently prevalent on the Oregon Coast.  With the addition of needed telecommunications infrastructure and support services, we should be able to attract these kinds of businesses to South Lincoln County.  The Economic Development Alliance of Lincoln County serves as a key contact for businesses interested in locating in Lincoln County, working with the Small Business Development Center of Oregon Coast Community College and Cascades West Financial Services.   Chambers of commerce receiving relocation inquiries, but lacking the staff or resources to handle such inquiries, may route them to the Alliance for assistance.
Strategy 3.1 Support the recruitment of home-based businesses.
Home-based  businesses minimally impact existing infrastructure while creating new jobs.  By encouraging “friendly” city ordinances within South Lincoln County, we can work to create an environment in which home-based businesses can grow. Incorporated and unincorporated communities in South Lincoln County should remove licensing and zoning barriers to home-based businesses that do not substantially increase vehicular or “foot’ traffic in their neighborhoods.

Strategy 3.2 Support the recruitment of telecommuters.
Workers that work from their homes or from telecenters minimally impact infrastructure, and generally earn higher pay than those who work at traditional workplaces.  Telecommuters can live in South Lincoln County, yet work for employers anywhere in the world. This type of “export activity” is desirable because telecommuters bring income into their communities and generally spend it locally, thus building wealth in a community.

Strategy 3.3 Support the recruitment of responsible small manufacturers.
Most small manufacturers bring needed income into the local economy, and offer good jobs. Working to bring more manufacturing companies to the Waldport Industrial Park and other appropriate locations, including those listed in the Lincoln County Enterprise Zone will support the diversification of South County’s economy.
